Kharagpur Division, the gateway to South Eastern Railway, plays a crucial role in the overall transportation scenario of the zone. The division is 110 years old and is spread over three states with boundaries defining Howrah in the East, Midnapore in the North (W.Bengal), Bhadrak in the South (Orissa) and Tatanagar in the West (Jharkhand). The division extends from Shalimar and Tikiapara in Kolkata to Tatanagar and up to Bhadrak o­n the Howrah-Chennai trunk route. The division also includes Haldia port and the tourist resort - Digha.

The division has 1959 km of rail track of which 1473 km is electrified. Most of the division has BG lines, and there is also a third line from Tikiapara to Panskura and fourth rail line is being constructed between Tikiapara and Santragachi and the 3rd rail line from Panskura is being extended to Kharagpur.

Kharagpur station has the unique distinction of having the longest platform in the world (1072.5 m).

On an average, 46 pairs of Mail/Express trains, 13 pairs of Passenger, 79 pairs of Suburban trains, 15 pairs of MEMU & 4 pairs of DEMU run o­n a daily basis. o­n freight operations front, the division caters to the transportation needs of Haldia Port and various other Industries in the area. The main commodities loaded from Haldia are imported coal, POL, fertilizers, vegetable oil etc.

The Division has staff strength of about 21,132 personnel. Kharagpur also has the biggest Workshops o­n the Indian Railways, which was built in 1898, which has staff strength of about 10,000.

Kharagpur Railway colony is the biggest Railway settlement in India having about 13,000 quarters. Type wise breakup of quarters is Type-I – 9418, Type-II 2970, Type-III 459, Type-IV 206 & Type-V 70.

There is a 340-bedded Railway Hospital at Kharagpur catering to the medical needs of Railway employees and other organizations.

At Kharagpur, there are 4 Primary Rly schools, 2 Rly High schools & 3 Rly Higher secondary schools, which cater to the educational requirements of Railway staff. Besides this, there is a Kendriya Vidyalaya, which is sponsored by the Railways. Additionally, there are other KVs and convent schools at Kharagpur. There are two important Railway Institutes viz. Rabindra Institute & South Institute. There are two community centers and o­ne more community center is in the pipe line.

The rich cultural heritage of the division is maintained and encouraged through Jatras in Oriya & Bengali, inter – divisional events and various in-house competitions.
